Restaurant Review: The Owl - San Antonio, New Mexico

A bold taste, an even bolder atmosphere

As we said in our review of La Pasadita, there's more to a restaurant than location, location, location. Similarly, there's more to a restaurant than a nice building; as evidenced by both La Pasadita and the Owl. The Owl's building is, frankly, ugly. It might even be scary if you weren't taken there on your first visit by some reassuring locals who tell you, "don't worry, you won't get food poisoning here." However, once you get past the somewhat shady outward appearances, you soon find a place that - while certainly not fine dining - affords the opportunity to enjoy a nice burger, grilled cheese, or basket of onion rings. The inside walls are adorned with dollar bills which are left - and often autographed - by diners from all over the state and all over the world. Every year, the Owl owners take the dollars down and bundle them up for donation to charity. A nice touch. For atmosphere, we rate the Owl a 4.5 out of 5; but keep in mind we use the term atmosphere like one would use it at a Harley rally, not a yacht club. For taste, we rate it a 3.5/5. Average the two together and we come up with a 4/5, for its genre. Give it a try!
