Restaurant Review: Stage Door Grill; Socorro, NM

The Stage Door Grill is located in the historic Abeyta building off of Socorro's plaza, which has housed several restaurants in recent memory (some good, some not so good), including of course Socorro Springs Brewing Company prior to their move to their current building on California Street. I have always thought the Abeyta building made a nice venue for a restaurant, so was quite pleased when the Stage Door opened. Ok, enough with the past; let's talk about the present time (and, oh, what a wonderful time it is)!

The Two A's: Atmosphere and Ambience

The Stage Door Grill has ambience and atmosphere in spades. Nothing else in town compares to the Abeyta building, especially with the beautiful furnishings and art that the current owners have used in decorating it. While Socorro Springs Brewing Company's digs are nice, they still have that "yuppie-recently-built" feel; the Abeyta building exudes the kind of charm only found in cool, historic buildings. A+ on the two A's - or should we say three A's?!

The Three T's: taste, taste, and taste

The menu at the Stage Door Grill is a welcome change for Socorro. For the lighter side, they offer excellent salads and even a veggie burger. Yes, a veggie burger in Socorro, New Mexico - at long last! For the heartier side, they have a fantastic selection of delicious fare including Cajun cuisine such as Red Beans and Rice, Jambalaya, and Etoufee. I've had both the Red Beans and Rice and the Jambalaya and can heartily endorse both; next time I'm trying the Etoufee. Another highly recommended selection is the pork chops; they melt in your mouth - these are no pan fried pork chops found at a greasy spoon diner or truck stop, but represent a delectable treat. Bottom line: very good menu, very well prepared. On the three T's, we give them another T for TERRIFIC - or should we say four T's?!

5 stars

Drum roll, please... The Stage Door Grill now takes the title as our favorite restaurant in Socorro. There are many other good restaurants, so we are not denigrating the other fine establishments in town. However, the Stage Door simply takes the cake. Speaking of cake, if you dine at the Stage Door you must (MUST!) save room for the Chocolate Lava Cake with ice cream. It's the best dessert I've had in a long time. Bon appetite!
