Seeking contributors and citizen journalists

Citizen participation

We're just getting warmed up here at Socorro News. We're looking for some local citizens interested in helping us to establish a citizen-run, not-for-profit, fact-driven (as opposed to progaganda-prone) news site here in Socorro. We welcome people of all political persuasions, but realize that your material will be vetted for accuracy by our staff. The pay, well there is none - but this is about citizen participation, not money. Need story ideas? We've got some; or create your own.

Yeah, but aren't there already two papers in Socorro?

We intend to complement, not compete with, the existing papers in Socorro. El Defensor Chieftain and The Mountain Mail often do a great job covering local events, and we recognize that. However, there are occasions when their efforts fall short, lack the proper background, or do not go into sufficient depth on a topic. On some occasions, they simply don't cover an important story. Other times, they may cover a story but accept the "official line" handed to them by the big wigs in town, without cross-checking the facts or doing additional research. Here at Socorro News, we'll frankly never be able to compete with the two local papers in the variety of stories they cover; it's not our mission here to cover the local high school volleyball teams and things like that, for example. However, we do hope to give them a run for their money in depth, even if we cannot compete in breadth.

Ok, you convinced me - how can I get involved?

That's where you come in - your help will make this site a success. There are no deadlines; submit as many or as few stories as you wish. So, what are you waiting for? Drop us a line using our contact form and we'll get in touch.
